Vintage Multi-Gemstone Scarecrow Brooch
Vintage Multi-Gemstone Scarecrow Brooch -- attributed to Cherny -- composed of 14k yellow gold. Depicting the body of a scarecrow, set with gems and a texturing to the gold, with an articulating head and legs. There is a large cabochon lapis lazuli set within the head, 2 rubies at the hands, 2 blue sapphires at the feet; with turquoise and diamonds accenting the scarecrow's front. The brooch measures approximately 2 3/8" tall by 1 3/4" tall; weighs 22 grams. American origin. Circa 1970.
Cherny is a company that got its start when Rudi Cherny left Germany in the 1930s to escape Nazism. He ended up in Australia and began working with his friend John Altmann (a fellow expatriate German). In 1948, they began utilizing their practical and innovative skills to honor their new homeland by specializing in Australian Opal.
They opened 'Altmann + Cherny' in Melbourne, and travelled around the Australian outback to the opal mining towns of Coober Pedy, Andamooka, and White Cliffs buying rough, unpolished opals directly from the opal miners. They taught themselves how to cut and polish opals, and how to manufacture jewelry. Altmann & Cherny have became a market leader in Australian Opal and they are still making jewelry to this day, with a location being founded in the Miami, Florida in 1981.
